Wes Allen, PhD, LPC-MHSP, ACS
Owner, New Growth Counseling
Working as a counselor feels like a privilege to me and I consider it an honor anytime someone invites me into their life to begin working together. Within the counseling process, I believe the relationship between counselor and client is the most important factor. Individuals who do not feel safe, heard, respected, and valued by their counselor are going to quickly feel frustrated and find themselves unable to make progress in their goals. When working with clients, I prioritize the relationship so that individuals I work with are able to feel confident that our time together is one wherein they are safe to explore, grow, and heal.
I graduated from the University of North Georgia in 2016 with an MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. I worked in community mental health for a little over a year before deciding to pursue further training and move to Knoxville, Tennessee. I completed my PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision in the Summer of 2021. My dissertation was focused on the development of teacher identity for counselor educator doctoral students.
My approach to counseling is based on my own experiences as a counselor and has been honed during my time in practice. Generally, I incorporate a mixture of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy that aims to help clients set meaningful, realistic goals for their lives and then critically examine the roadblocks the prevent them from reaching those goals.
I founded New Growth Counseling in 2022 with the goal of bringing quality, affordable mental health care to the North Knoxville area. In addition, I also work as an adjunct professor at Johnson University in Knoxville, Tennessee.
I am blessed with an incredible wife and two wonderful children. We enjoy spending time outside, going to the park, or gardening in the backyard. I sincerely thank you for taking the time to read about me and my work as a counselor. If I can answer any questions or help you in you way in your journey towards wellness, please feel free to contact me.
